The Civil War
 Confederate Cased Images

11209 - GEORGIA CONFEDERATE TRIPLE ARMED
, 1/6th plate tintype in a nice stag design thermo plastic case. A young soldier standing holding his model 1842 musket, small pistol holstered on his belt as well as a large wooden-handle bowie knife in a brass tipped sheath. Image has some edge solarization that is not really obtrusive with the image in hand. Came out of an unknown Georgia estate about 15 years ago, so no specific ID is possible. The uniform matches up with a Georgia uniform shown in Portraits in Conflict - Georgia. Thus we are listing price wise as just a triple-armed Reb................................
$2,500.00

121100 - ORDER #9 SOUVENIR PHOTOGRAPH, 8" x 10", souvenir card from an unknown Baltimore photographer showing a vignette photo of Lee with Confederate banners to either side and the text of his famous Order #9, a farewell to his troops in April 1865 at Appomattox Court House. An albumen photo on the original card stock, minor staining, but not affecting eye appeal or content. First one we have had of this rare souvenir albumen issued in 1865-66 in Baltimore. Simulated signature of Lee.............................$495.00

120901 - SOUTH CAROLINA CAVALRYMAN WITH PALMETTO FROND ON HIS HAT, 1/4 plate tintype. A young South Carolina cavalryman seated cradling his saber in his arms. He wears a pinned back hat with a woven palm frond South Carolina Palmetto Tree on his hat. The artist had put some gold paint on the buttons and emblem, but just missed the trunk of the tree where the distinctive palm frond woven pattern can be clearly seen in the enlarged photo. There's a weak pencil ID inside the case that is difficult to read so it is just being advertised as a "South Carolina soldier". These Palmetto frond emblems were common with many South Carolina soldiers especially from the Low County around Charleston where locals still today use these fronds to make decorative baskets. A nice image that certainly can be identified by State........................................$2,950.00

120902 - TENNESSEE DOUBLE ARMED IMAGE FROM WEAKLEY COUNTY, TENNESSEE, 1/9th plate ambrotype in full case. A young Tennessee Rebel wearing a round hat holding his musket to his right and has a percussion pistol tucked into his belt. A nice, clean Confederate in a regulation uniform that just came out of Weakley County, Tennessee (West Tennessee) and just surfaced at Nashville. Image is better than out photo in hand as the high DPI picks up small dust adhered to the ambrotype. An attractive image for the Tennessee collector..................................................$2,200.00

120905 - ARMED REBEL SIXTH PLATE, 1/6th plate tintype in full case. A young Rebel seated posing with a Colt Navy 36 caliber revolver across his chest. His gray uniform is clearly seen with tinted buttons under a darker frock coat. He sits in a Victorian chair posing for the photographer. Just purchased from a Texas book dealer, but no definitive place of origin. Possibly the chair may be linked to other Texas photos.....................................$1,625.00

120906 - A NICE LARGE REPRESENTATIVE CONFEDERATE, 1/6th plate ambrotype in a full case. A large bust pose of a uniformed Confederate with a heavy beard in a regulation jacket with lightly tinted buttons. Excellent quality free from any, but trifle marks. Just purchased from a Texas book dealer, but have no definitive other information. Probably Texas, but have no proof. Just a great buy on a quality image........................................$775.00

120907 - IMAGE FROM JEFFERSON, TEXAS, 1/6th plate ambrotype. A bearded Rebel with a crude battle shirt with vertical dark trim as well as with the large pocket on the shirt. Old paper in case states, "Jefferson, Texas, Marion County." Image is sharp and clear with just a need for a little black backing at his left sleeve. Typical battle shirt style of many Texas units. Overall a nice image from Texas. Published in "Still More Confederate Faces"........................................$895.00

81701 - YOUNG WESTERN REBEL DOUBLE ARMED, 1/6th plate melianotype in full leather case. This young Rebel grasps his model 1842 musket and has a large revolver tucked into his belt. His kepi ornament resembles a bird which could be possibly a Louisiana pelican, but not definitive. He wears a US buckle Model 1839 which was not a Union issue so it obviously a reused buckle from the Mexican War period. His countenance is definitely Confederate with the homespun uniform. The image has some minor blems, but is a nice Reb at a reasonable price...............................................$1,995.00

IDENTIFIED 1ST TENNESSEE INFANTRY
3 IMAGES

81702 - PRIVATE J. CLAY MARCH, 1ST TENNESSEE INFANTRY COMPANY A, Company A was the "Rock City Guards" organized near Nashville. Group contains three images (a) 1/9th plate ambrotype of March in civilian clothes, (b) Carte de Viste by Giers of Nashville standing wearing a battle shirt and a large Colt Army revolver strapped to his waist, (c) 1/6th plate ambrotype in a full case of the same view as the CDV with March standing with a holstered Colt Army revolver. The image is crystal clear and has great contrast. Just coming from an old collection and it was bought years ago from the family near Nashville. The 1st Tennessee fought at Cheat Mountain, Shiloh, Perryville, and from Murfreesboro to Atlanta. March is shown on a website showing "Uniforms of the 1st Tennessee" with a wonderful description of his uniform. A great trio of images including a spectacular ambrotype. All three images..........................................$5,500.00

81703 - A DASHING SOUTH CAROLINA OFFICER, 1/6th plate ambrotype in a beautiful mother of pearl decorated case. A dashing young officer drawing his sword from its scabbard and a revolver is tucked into his belt. His hat is turned upwards with a black ostrich plume and an evident "Jeff Davis" eagle hat piece is on the hat. His two piece buckle is lightly tinted making it impossible to see the plate detail. Consensus of opinion is that he is a member of the 3rd South Carolina Infantry as his uniform matches known examples. An attractive image with plenty of character and housed in a wonderful case...................................$3,850.00

73001 - YOUNG ARMED NORTH CAROLINA OFFICER, 1/6th plate tintype in full leather case. A standing pose of a young officer holding up a militia style sword with a knights head pommel. His two piece buckle is lightly tinted as is the hilt of the sword. A possible artillery officer. Just a beautiful image. Came out of a North Carolina estate...........................$3,595.00

73002 - A QUADRUPLE ARMED REBEL, 1/6th plate ambrotype in full leather case. This Rebel is ready for action as he has three pistols in his belt and holds up a short sword vertically. Definitely looks Western (Texas) and the image was taken about May 1861 at the beginning of the War as the case is dated May 10th, 1861 with a love note to the soldier asking the "Lord of Heaven and Earth to protect him"..."shall I see my dear one anymore". A nice pencil inscription on the inside of the leather case. Such multiple armed Confederates are rare today...................................................$3,975.00

73003 - YOUNG REBEL WITH FANTASTIC DETAILED POWDER FLASK, 1/6th plate ambrotype in a full leather case. This young Confederate poses seated wearing a lightly tinted light jacket, large revolver in his belt and a brass powder horn on his belt that is so detailed you can see the cannon scene. Good details............$2,200.00

73006 - ALABAMA OFFICER WITH WHITNEY AND SABER

$1,695.00     NOW $1,350.00

61007 - IDENTIFIED VIRGINIA CAVALRYMAN
, 1/6th plate ambrotype. A wonderful posed image of Pvt. Peter Noe, 24th Virginia Cavalry, Partisan Cavalry, Cropper's Unit. Noe poses with a huge bowie knife and his musket, which his name is carved very clearly "P. NOE". A full-standing Confederate in regulation uniform wearing a nine button tight-fitting jacket, kepi, holding his rifle and fixed bayonet at his right side. 61011 - ARMED REBEL AMBROTYPE, 1/6th plate ambrotype in a full thermo plastic case of an armed rebel standing at attention with his musket and bayonet. The background is dark and hangs from the ceiling which suggests a traveling photographer who set up shop in a building. The image is identified as "Henry Pratt." Confederate records show four Henry Pratt's that could be this soldier who is an infantryman; one for Texas, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. The image of the soldier is crisp and has excellent contrast against the unusual darker background. A nice image of this infantry man in full regulation uniform........................$3,500.00     NOW $3,100.00

As in the Noe image, there are initials carved into the stock of the musket. There are several initials carved into this roster. Image is sharp and clear with just some trivial blems associated with ambrotypes, not detracting to the eye. Although not ided, much nicer than our other 24th Va. Cav. image..........................................SOLD

120903 - JUST A REALLY NICE REPRESENTATIVE CONFEDERATE AMBROTYPE, 1/9th plate ambrotype in a full case. A great little Reb in a regulation uniform with piping running vertical on his shell jacket with Corporal stripes on his sleeves. An outstanding image with great clarity and contrast...............................................SOLD

73004 - PRIVATE JOHN SHEPHERD, 1/6th plate ambrotype in a full thermoplastic case. That soldier being John Shepherd who was "Missing in action, July 1st, 1863 at Gettysburg". He was a native of Richmond, VA and enlisted in the 38th North Carolina (Company E) on December 31st, 1861 and was listed as a 17 year old planter.
