- THE STEAM ENGINE "GENERAL", THE GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE -
THE ANDREW'S RAID, Often described as "The Great
Locomotive Chase" when 22 Union Volunteers on the night
of April 12th, 1862, went deep into Confederate Territory and captured
a S engine named "THE GENERAL" belonging to
the Western and Atlantic Railroad in Atlanta. The purpose of the raid
was to cut the ties between Chattanooga and Marietta, GA. They headed
north after the capture of the steam engine General and stopped every
few miles to cut telegraph lines and lay ties on the tracks while
heading to Chattanooga. They were pursued by the Confederates in the
engine "TEXAS". The General ran out of fuel
after about 90 miles and the raiders and their leader Andrews were
captured. Andrews and seven others were executed in Atlanta, fourteen
others were imprisoned. Eight escaped in October 1862 and the
remaining were paroled in 1863. The six paroled were the first to
receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. The banknotes
